Bridget O’Gorman works with text, live events, video and sculptural installation. Her enquiries move between mental, material and embodied perspectives; considering otherness with speculative and expanded corporeal experiences. She is currently researching a new departure in her work, reflecting on the disabled experience in relation to gender, creativity and access.
This semi-autobiographical work employs text and language to evoke the non-verbal. Drawing from her experiences of living with a permanent spinal injury, this work features one of a series of three images: the infant, the non-human and the body in pain on the same plane. The work attempts to mitigate what might be unconsciously framed within the traditionally hierarchical realms of capacity, speaking to an expansion of what it is to use language and body. These pseudo-posters are presented in the guise of instructional literature for medical purposes. The use of the word ‘you’, is used in these information pamphlets to implicate the viewer directly. Here they also tell chapters of a wider narrative or story.
Bridget is currently taking part in the inaugural PIVOT programme: a scheme delivered in partnership by Castlefield Gallery and the Bluecoat, Liverpool which includes bespoke mentoring and skills development for mid-career artists.
